Not everyone was born with a green thumb though, and while some avid gardeners can develop one over time, it doesn’t come as naturally to everyone. For those that struggle with demanding plants, but who still want to benefit from the beauty of flowering surroundings, low-maintenance plants may just be the best compromise. Whether you don’t have a great track record with plants, don’t have the time, or face accessibility issues with gardening, we’ve got you covered.

The first thing to do is to make a plan for your low-maintenance garden. Then, choose your favourite plants, and pick up whatever tools you’ll need to bring your vision to life.
We’ve put together a list of our favourite no-fuss, easy-to-care-for plants that can bring your garden to life. With these, you can spend less time tending to your garden, and more time enjoying it.
Easy-care greenery
These verdant additions to your garden can make for great space fillers between flowering plants. Whether they’re in with the foliage, overhanging a flower bed, or lining a pathway, these plants are a perfect low-fuss option for your garden.
Creeping Boobialla
As the name suggests, this leafy green is ideal for a bohemian-style garden, with stalks creeping out from the plant. It grows to just 0.2-0.3 metres in height and is a sun-loving plant.
Philodendron Xanadu
Don’t let the technical name put you off, this one’s a lot easier to care for than it is to pronounce! Its large leaves give it a tropical feel, perfect for a garden that feels like an idyllic getaway location. This philodendron can be planted either in a pot or on mass in your garden, and is ideally suited to sunny or lightly shaded areas.
Succulents
Famous for their low-maintenance nature, succulents look pretty impressive even though they require little care. Plants like cacti, chalk sticks, and agave are the minimalists of plantlife, not needing much TLC at all, and thriving even with little water and low levels of soil nutrients. There are so many succulents to choose from, and by getting a few different types, you can very easily style a garden with vastly different looking plants, varying in size, shape, and colour.
Grass Tree
Another Aussie native for our list, the grass tree is a good shout if you’ve got space to fill. This landscape plant is low-maintenance, and lends itself to a pretty laid back atmosphere. They can grow to over 2 metres in height, but it will take a while to get there- some grass trees that are 100 years old still sit at around 1 metre tall.
Now for a dash of colour!
Liriope
Bringing a pop of purple to the greenery, the liriope is a favourite among landscapers thanks to its low-maintenance style. It comes in a variety of tones and makes for great border planting, as well as mass planting to really bring life to a blank canvas garden.
Indian Hawthorn
This may look like a delicate flowering plant, but is a lot stronger than it looks. The resilient plant flowers in the springtime, and it’s dark green leaves will bring richness to your garden all year. This one grows to an impressive 1.8 metres, but can be pruned to maintain its shape.
Birthday Candles
Cutely names for their glowing appearance, but otherwise known as Banksia Spinulosa, this evergreen plant is sure to bring a radiant aura to your yard. Flowering in autumn and winter, this eye-catching plant will no doubt light up the colder months.
Gymea Lily
This native Australian plant hits a maximum height of a pretty impressive 5 metres. The lime green sword-shaped leaves stop at about 1 metre high, and give way to a bright red flower above. With just a bit of slow-release fertiliser, this plant will thrive.
