Plants & Flowers That Look Great All Year

A beautiful garden can elevate even the most drab property! With stunning colours, shapes and smells, there’s no wonder that so many people want their garden to look beautiful throughout the year. While most plants are seasonal (known as Annuals), meaning they tend to thrive in certain seasons, some plants (known as Perennials) are able to look good all year round!

We at Jim’s Mowing have used our expert gardening knowledge to create this blog article so your garden looks fantastic every single day of the year. Read on to learn about what plants and flowers look great regardless of season.

What to plant for an all year round garden

If you want a stunning garden, no matter the season, then you will need to do more than just plant Perennials. Instead, choose plants which either flower throughout the year, or are able to display beautiful foliage and colour each season. You can choose some plants from our list below to get started on your all year round garden!

Kangaroo paw

This beautiful Australian native can flower year round! The striking flowers grow best in soil with good drainage and reliable moisture in full-sun to some shade. Don’t be surprised if the colours within your kangaroo paw plant look slightly different to the label or the last year as the colours change in intensity in accordance with the weather.

Bergenia

Bergenia is a perfect addition to your year round garden with their large glossy leaves adding stunning texture. In the spring, the purplish-pink to pale-pink or white flowers bloom. In the autumn, the foliage can stay green or turn to a striking bronze colour.

Geraniums

Geraniums can come in a wide variety of beautiful colours, including red, white, pink, and dark purple. These hardy flowers can last year around, as long as they are subjected to frost! Geraniums do best in full sun, but should be shaded in temperatures above 30 degrees.

Native violas

The Native Viola will look gorgeous every season in your garden thanks to their sweet purple and white flowers and green foliage. These plants grow best with filtered sun to even full shade, and require well-draining soil and frequent watering.

Lavender

Lavender is instantly recognisable due to its bright purple and green colouring and fragrant scent. You’ll have striking colour year round by planting lavender in your garden. Plant in well-drained alkaline soil and ensure it receives at least six hours of sun a day!
